Most successful individuals, regardless of their profession, have had a start in humble beginnings. And through hard work and attention to ever-improving opportunities, they make their mark. When it comes to todays successful and well-known Chefs, one of those opportunity springboards came from their experience and good fortune at Buzzy O’Keeffe’s “River Cafe”.
These names include, among others, Drew Nieporent (The Myriad Restaurant Group–Nobu, Tribeca Grill, Batard etc.), David Burke(David Burke Group), Larry Forgione(“The Conservatory Restaurant Group–St Helena, CA, & considered the “Godfather of American Cuisine”), Marc Forgione,(“Restaurant Marc Forgione)”, Charlie Palmer(“Aureole”, Charlie Palmer Group ), Joe Realmuto (Nick & Toni’s), Brad Steelman (“River Cafe”) and Gerry Hayden & Claudia Fleming (“North Fork Table & Inn”).
Last week Buzzy and friends held a special BBQ/Reunion at the River Cafe as a fundraiser for Chef Gerry Hayden, who is suffering from ALS. All proceeds donated went to the foundation for ALS research. The Alum Chefs all created a special dish for the event, held out in the garden and on the terrace at what may be considered one of the nicest eating spots in NYC–which finally opened a few months ago after the debacle of Hurricane Sandy. The sunsets are incomparable, especially against the lower Manhattan skyline. It’s difficult to imagine eating a meal in this restaurant and coming away with anything but a “magical” feeling.
